loss, stress and time management, GLBT issues, and
athletic performance enhancement.

Dr. Varady and her associates do not perform forensic

PSYCHOTHERAPY
Dr. Varady provides psychotherapy to adolescents and
adults. Therapy sessions are usually scheduled once or
twice per week and last 45 minutes.  The duration of
treatment and frequency of sessions varies depending on
the nature of a client's difficulties, however Dr. Varady
often meets with patients for a number of months or years.
Meeting twice per week greatly deepens and enhances the
treatment and is usually recommended for patients with the
time and resources to engage in this type of work.

Dr. Varady has been trained in a number of empirically
supported treatments for psychological problems. These
include Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavior
Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, EMDR (Ms. Beyer),
and Interpersonal Therapy. Dr. Varady's training and
experience allow her to create a treatment plan that will
meet your unique needs.

BARIATRIC PRE-SURGICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL
EVALUATION
Dr. Varady meets with patients at least three times to obtain
a complete psychosocial history and to administer and
interpret psychological tests and measures.  You will
complete a questionnaire before attending the first visit
(which lasts 60 minutes and consists of the interview).
The second visit involves completing psychological
measures on the computer or with pencil/paper.  The
third (and sometimes fourth) meeting allows time to
discuss the test results and ways the patient can enhance
their success post-surgery.  There is no pass/fail for this
evaluation but sometimes psychological/psychiatric treatment
is recommended to increase the likelihood of sustained
weight-loss and psychological health.  At times, surgeries
are delayed to ensure the patient is psychologically healthy
and can meet  the demands of post-surgical life.  Typical
recommendations may include: pharmacological
interventions (medication), psycho-education,
psychotherapy to address potential post-surgery stumbling
blocks, nutritional consultation, close aftercare monitoring,
and/or bariatric surgery support group attendance.

Your report will be completed and faxed to your surgeon
within two weeks of your final pre-operative visit with
Dr. Varady. You will also meet with Dr. Varady
post-surgery for a follow-up visit to address any
emotional or relationship issues that have arisen as
your body, mind and emotions are reshaped.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT/MENTAL COACHING
As a former collegiate athlete and group fitness instructor,
Dr. Varady appreciates the "mental side" of training and
competition and the unique stressors athletes face. During
her pre-doctoral internship she specialized in work with
athletes and was a liaison to The George Washington
University athletic department. In addition to her general
psychology work, Dr. Varady specializes in anxiety
management, time management, performance
enhancement, visualisation, and team building. If desired,
she will work closely with your coach, nutritionist,
physiologist, etc, to help you reach your performance goals
while maintaining balance and success in other areas of life.

focusing on the interactions between therapist and client,
and thorough examination of transference and
counter-transference reactions, with a goal of deepening the
psychotherapeutic work.
